However, two problems emerge with the increasing use of CCTV (producing a potential counterfinality). First, there is the impact on civil liberties and the erosion of privacy. It seems that, wherever we walk along an inner-city street, ‘big brother’ may be sitting in a remote-control room watching us. Second, there is the problem that installing CCTV in one area may help reduce street crime there, but inadvertently divert the crime elsewhere. This could result in more crime in neighbouring communities where CCTV is not available.
